About This Initiative

Strong Future Las Vegas youth employment program provides workforce readiness training and employment to youth in Las Vegas.

Our workforce readiness training offers a seven-session course taught by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and includes resume writing, time management, interview techniques, ethics, and professionalism. Our adult advisors work closely with youth and their worksite supervisors to provide feedback and guidance, ensuring a meaningful and productive work experience.

Summer Jobs

Working for the summer helps youth explore varied career opportunities, enhance essential workplace skills, and establish valuable relationships with the business community for future job opportunities.

After-School Jobs

Strong Future Las Vegas youth employment program continually runs job readiness training, including financial literacy, communication and conflict management skills, and provides a range of comprehensive supports based on youth need. After completing this training, youth are matched with an after-school job and are supported by an adult advisor to encourage commitment to both work and school responsibilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be able to interview youth candidates?

Yes, YDSI staff will screen candidates that match your criteria and help to coordinate a time for theinterview with your business.

What kind of support can I expect from Strong Future Las Vegas Summer Youth Employment Program staff?

Youth are matched with a job coach to ensure the experience is beneficial for both parties.

How long does the program typically last?

Youth will participate in a seven-session workforce readiness training during spring 2018. Most summer employment opportunities begin during the first week of June and end in early August. Youth may be willing and able to continue working beyond our program and throughout the school year as well.

What are the benefits of hiring a young person through the Strong Future Las Vegas Summer Youth Employment Program?

Research shows that summer employment programs help youth build new and valuable skills. One study of summer jobs programs, funded by Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), found that nearly 75% of youth summer job participants improved their work readiness skills (1).

Over the last couple of summers, YDSI has witnessed the benefits that summer youth employment can bring to a community: youth were connected to the labor force; community members earned needed income, and, in turn, supported the local economy.

These young adults can meet your real business needs and fill vacancies all while learning the skills that are important for real life such as being on time and communicating effectively as a professional. Our future workforce is being built today. By hiring youth through the Strong Future Las Vegas Summer Youth Employment Program, you will have access to some of Las Vegas’ rising stars, many of whom will return to your organization in the coming years.

If I don’t have job opportunities for the summer, are there other ways I can support the Strong Future Las Vegas Summer Youth Employment Program?

Yes! Even if you are not able to hire youth directly, your contribution of $3,000 covers the cost of a youth to gain valuable work experience at a non-profit or public agency for the summer. Click here for more information on how to become a Strong Future Las Vegas Summer Youth Employment sponsor.

What will it cost for my business to participate?

For employers paying youth directly, the cost will not exceed $2520 for a youth working 30 hours per week for a 7-week duration. This model is based on the youth, making $12 per hour. Employers are asked to pay a minimum of $10 per hour and provide youth with the opportunity to work 25-30 hours per week.
